Question 1

What is Zanonia indica?

Accepted Answer

Zanonia indica is a tropical climbing plant in the family Cucurbitaceae, native to South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. It is best known for its large, winged seeds and its documented role in traditional ayurvedic medicine. It is the sole species in the genus Zanonia, making it a monotypic and botanically distinct plant.

Question 2

What is Zanonia indica used for medicinally?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic tradition, parts of the plant — particularly leaves and roots — have been used in preparations aimed at reducing inflammation and easing joint pain. It appears in official catalogues of Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. Its use is generally confined to traditional practitioners rather than commercial herbal products.

Question 3

Where does Zanonia indica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found in the wet zone of Sri Lanka, particularly in lowland and mid-elevation moist forests in the south and southwest of the island. It grows along forest margins and in secondary growth areas with sufficient humidity. It is not typically cultivated and is encountered in semi-wild or wild settings.

Question 4

Why are the seeds of Zanonia indica unusual?

Accepted Answer

Zanonia indica produces flat, winged seeds with papery margins that allow them to glide through the air from the forest canopy. These seeds are among the most structurally elegant dispersal mechanisms in the plant kingdom. Their aerodynamic design has reportedly attracted interest from early aviation researchers studying natural gliding forms.

Question 5

Is Zanonia indica endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Zanonia indica is not endemic to Sri Lanka. It has a broader native range across South and Southeast Asia, including parts of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asian countries. Within Sri Lanka, however, it is part of the recognised national catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 6

What family does Zanonia indica belong to?

Accepted Answer

Zanonia indica belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, within the subfamily Zanonioideae. This places it in the same broad family as cucumbers, melons, and gourds, though its characteristics — including its forest-climbing habit and winged seeds — differ substantially from those of cultivated cucurbits.

Question 7

How is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant knowledge preserved?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains formal catalogues of indigenous medicinal plants, including species like Zanonia indica. This knowledge is also preserved through traditional practitioners known as veda mahattayas, as well as through academic research at Sri Lankan universities. There is growing international interest in pharmacological validation of plants documented in these traditional systems.
