Question 1

What is Vatica paludosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine, Vatica paludosa is valued primarily for its resinous bark and heartwood extracts, which practitioners have traditionally used in preparations for inflammatory and skin conditions. Its inclusion in the official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants of Sri Lanka reflects its documented role in the island's healing tradition. Anyone seeking treatment should consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 2

Where can Vatica paludosa be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Vatica paludosa grows in the lowland wet-zone forests of southwestern Sri Lanka, typically in swampy or poorly drained habitats below around 500 metres elevation. Protected forest reserves and intact forest patches in the wet zone represent its primary remaining habitat. Much of its original range has been reduced by land conversion over the past two centuries.

Question 3

What family does Vatica paludosa belong to?

Accepted Answer

Vatica paludosa belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae, a group of large tropical trees known for their two-winged fruits and aromatic resins. This family is ecologically dominant in the lowland rainforests of tropical Asia and has significant commercial and medicinal importance across the region.

Question 4

Is Vatica paludosa endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Vatica paludosa is not strictly endemic to Sri Lanka; the species and its close relatives are distributed across parts of South and Southeast Asia. However, the Sri Lankan populations are ecologically distinct and are found within one of the world's recognised biodiversity hotspots, giving them particular conservation significance.

Question 5

What does the name paludosa mean?

Accepted Answer

The species epithet paludosa is derived from the Latin word palus, meaning marsh or swamp. It refers to the tree's characteristic preference for wet, waterlogged, or swampy ground conditions, which distinguishes its habitat from many other forest tree species.

Question 6

How is Vatica paludosa different from other Vatica species?

Accepted Answer

Different Vatica species can be distinguished by details of their leaf venation, fruit wing structure, bark characteristics, and habitat preferences. Vatica paludosa is specifically associated with swampy lowland conditions, which sets it apart from related species that favour better-drained soils. Field identification typically requires the expertise of a trained botanist.

Question 7

Is Vatica paludosa threatened or endangered?

Accepted Answer

Like many lowland wet-zone forest species in Sri Lanka, Vatica paludosa faces pressure from habitat loss and forest fragmentation. The status of individual dipterocarp species varies, and assessments are maintained by organisations such as the IUCN. Protecting intact wet-zone forest ecosystems is considered the most effective conservation measure for species in this group.
