Pterocarpus marsupium (Gammalu)

Pterocarpus marsupium, known in Sri Lanka as Gammalu, is a large deciduous tree native to South Asia. Revered in Ayurveda, its heartwood and bark are valued for their medicinal properties, especially in regulating blood sugar levels and promoting wound healing. The tree’s reddish resin, called “kino,” is also used in traditional remedies. Gammalu wood is dense and durable, often used in fine furniture and carpentry. It plays a vital role in both traditional medicine and ecological balance in Sri Lankan forests.

Pterocarpus marsupium is part of the catalog of ayurvedic medicinal plants of Sri Lanka.
