Question 1

What does TGFOP stand for in tea?

Accepted Answer

TGFOP stands for Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe. It is a grading descriptor used across black tea-producing countries, including Sri Lanka, indicating a whole-leaf tea with a high proportion of golden tips — the tender leaf buds that add sweetness, aroma, and visual appeal to the dry leaf.

Question 2

Is TGFOP the highest tea grade?

Accepted Answer

TGFOP sits near the top of the orthodox whole-leaf grading scale, but it can be surpassed by FTGFOP (Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe) and SFTGFOP (Special Finest), which indicate an even greater density of golden tips. Some estates further designate their single finest batch with a numeral, such as FTGFOP1.

Question 3

How do I brew TGFOP tea properly?

Accepted Answer

Use water cooled slightly from a full boil — around 90 to 95 °C — and steep for three to four minutes in a spacious teapot or infuser that allows the whole leaves room to unfurl. Nuwara Eliya TGFOP is typically enjoyed without milk to appreciate its floral character, while Uva or Dimbula TGFOP can support a small amount of milk.

Question 4

Why is TGFOP tea more expensive than regular Ceylon tea?

Accepted Answer

TGFOP requires selective hand-plucking of only the finest two leaves and a bud, followed by orthodox rolling and careful sorting to separate intact whole leaves rich in golden tips from broken grades. This labour-intensive process produces a small fraction of a garden's total output, which drives the premium at auction and retail.

Question 5

Which Sri Lanka tea region produces the best TGFOP?

Accepted Answer

Nuwara Eliya, at elevations above 1,800 m, is widely regarded as the source of Sri Lanka's most refined TGFOP, with a light golden liquor and pronounced floral notes. Uva region estates around Ella and Haputale produce a crisper, brighter style, particularly at the peak of the Uva season in July and August.

Question 6

What is the difference between TGFOP and Orange Pekoe (OP)?

Accepted Answer

Orange Pekoe is the base whole-leaf grade — clean, unbroken leaves producing a medium-bodied, bright cup. TGFOP builds on this by specifying a high proportion of golden tips and flowery top shoots, which add aromatic complexity, natural sweetness, and a more nuanced flavour profile.

Question 7

Can I buy TGFOP tea online from Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lakpura sources TGFOP and related whole-leaf grades from certified Sri Lankan estate brands including Mackwoods, Bluefield, Mlesna, Basilur, and Battler, and ships internationally. Look for teas carrying the Sri Lanka Tea Board's Lion Logo certification to confirm authenticity.

Question 8

Does TGFOP tea have health benefits?

Accepted Answer

Like other orthodox black teas, TGFOP contains antioxidants including theaflavins and thearubigins, as well as L-theanine, which is associated with calm alertness. Because the whole leaf is preserved through orthodox processing, TGFOP retains a broader range of these compounds than heavily broken or CTC-processed teas. That said, no specific health claims should be relied upon without consulting a health professional.
