Question 1

What is Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe tea?

Accepted Answer

Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (GFOP) is a whole-leaf black tea grade that includes a notable proportion of golden-coloured leaf tips. It ranks above standard Orange Pekoe and Flowery Orange Pekoe in the Orthodox tea grading system, producing a cup with more floral complexity and natural sweetness than basic OP grades.

Question 2

What does GFOP taste like compared to regular Ceylon tea?

Accepted Answer

GFOP shares the bright, brisk backbone typical of Ceylon black tea but adds floral and honey-like notes contributed by the golden tips. The finish is generally cleaner and slightly sweeter than a blended or CTC Ceylon tea, making it pleasant to drink without milk.

Question 3

Is Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe the same as Orange Pekoe?

Accepted Answer

No. Orange Pekoe (OP) is the base whole-leaf grade with no tip requirement. GFOP is a step up, specifying that golden leaf buds — the youngest, most delicate growth — must be present at a meaningful level. This adds complexity and commands a higher price at auction.

Question 4

Where is the best GFOP tea produced in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

High-grown regions such as Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula, and Uva are most associated with fine GFOP grades. The cooler temperatures and seasonal dry winds in these areas slow leaf growth, concentrating essential oils that give the tea its character. Named single-estate GFOP from these districts is generally more consistent than blended GFOP.

Question 5

How do I brew GFOP tea properly?

Accepted Answer

Use water at around 90–95 °C rather than a full rolling boil. Allow roughly 2–3 g of leaf per 200 ml of water and steep for 3–4 minutes in a teapot or spacious infuser basket. Taste at 3 minutes and adjust. The delicate floral notes from the golden tips are best appreciated without milk on the first tasting.

Question 6

Why is GFOP tea more expensive than standard tea bags?

Accepted Answer

GFOP requires disciplined two-leaf-and-bud hand plucking and Orthodox manufacturing, both of which are more labour-intensive than CTC (machine crush) processing used for most tea bags. The grade is also assessed and sold separately at the Colombo Tea Auction, where tip content drives a premium above commodity grades.

Question 7

How do I know if a Ceylon GFOP tea is genuine?

Accepted Answer

Look for the Sri Lanka Tea Board's Lion logo on the packaging, which certifies the tea was grown and made entirely in Sri Lanka. Single-estate labelling with a named district or estate is a further quality indicator. The dry leaf itself should show visible dark-brown wiry leaves interspersed with golden or amber-coloured tips.
