Accepted Answer

Yes, Sterculia urens is part of Sri Lanka's documented Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue. It typically grows in the dry and intermediate zones of the island, where the seasonal climate suits its deciduous growth habit.

Question 3

What is karaya gum and where does it come from?

Accepted Answer

Karaya gum, also called Indian tragacanth, is a natural plant gum exuded from incisions made in the bark of Sterculia urens. It swells rapidly in water to form a viscous gel and has been used both in traditional medicine and, more recently, as a food-grade thickener and stabiliser.

Question 4

Is Sterculia urens the same as the ghost tree?

Yes, 'ghost tree' is one of the common English names for Sterculia urens, referring to its pale, papery bark that peels to reveal an almost white trunk. It is also called the Indian tragacanth tree in botanical and trade contexts.

Question 5

What family does Sterculia urens belong to?

Accepted Answer

Sterculia urens belongs to the family Malvaceae under current botanical classification. It was previously placed in the family Sterculiaceae before that family was merged into Malvaceae following molecular phylogenetic research.

Question 6

Are there any safety concerns with using Sterculia urens medicinally?

Accepted Answer

As with any medicinal plant, Sterculia urens should be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. The seeds carry irritant hairs that can cause skin and eye irritation on contact. Active compounds in the bark may interact with certain conventional medicines, and appropriate dosage is important.

Question 7

Is Sterculia urens gum used outside Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Karaya gum derived from Sterculia urens is approved as a food additive (E416) in several countries, where it functions as a thickener, stabiliser, and emulsifier in processed foods. It also has applications in pharmaceuticals as a binder and in some ostomy care products.
