Accepted Answer

Karaya gum, also called Indian tragacanth, is a natural plant gum exuded from incisions made in the bark of Sterculia urens. It swells rapidly in water to form a viscous gel and has been used both in traditional medicine and, more recently, as a food-grade thickener and stabiliser.

Sterculia urens belongs to the family Malvaceae under current botanical classification. It was previously placed in the family Sterculiaceae before that family was merged into Malvaceae following molecular phylogenetic research.

Question 6

Are there any safety concerns with using Sterculia urens medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Active compounds in the bark may interact with certain conventional medicines, and appropriate dosage is important.

Question 7

Is Sterculia urens gum used outside Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer
