Rathna Ella Falls

Rathna Ella Falls, located in the village of Rathna Ella near Hasalaka in Sri Lanka's Central Province, is a captivating natural wonder. Standing at 101 meters, it is recognized as the 14th tallest waterfall in the country. The name "Rathna Ella" translates to "Field of Gems," reflecting both its stunning beauty and the folklore associated with hidden treasures in the area.

The waterfall originates from the Hasalaka Oya, a tributary of the Mahaweli River, and plays a crucial role in the local community by providing water for irrigation and paddy cultivation. Approximately 200 farmers depend on its waters for their livelihoods. The surrounding landscape is characterized by lush forests and diverse flora and fauna, offering a serene environment for visitors.

Accessing Rathna Ella involves a trek of about 3 to 4 kilometers through paddy fields, jungle paths, and small streams. The trail is moderately challenging and offers glimpses of rural life, terraced rice paddies, and tea plantations. Along the way, hikers may encounter wildlife such as monkeys, deer, and various bird species, enhancing the trekking experience.

While the waterfall is a popular spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers, visitors are advised to exercise caution. Swimming near the base can be dangerous due to deep waters and strong undercurrents, especially during the rainy season. The best time to visit is during the dry months, from December to March or June to September, when the trail is safer and the weather is more favorable.
