Question 1

What is Garcinia spicata used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurveda, Garcinia spicata is used primarily for its bark and fruit rind, which are prepared as decoctions or powders to address digestive complaints and inflammatory conditions. It is classified as a medicinal plant in the official Sri Lankan Ayurvedic catalogue. Treatment with this plant is typically guided by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Garcinia spicata?

Accepted Answer

Garcinia spicata does not have a single widely used Sinhala common name in the way that Garcinia cambogia is universally known as Goraka. It may be referred to by regional or traditional names in rural communities, but it is most reliably identified by its Latin binomial in Ayurvedic and botanical texts.

Question 3

Is Garcinia spicata the same as Goraka?

Accepted Answer

No. Goraka is the common name for Garcinia cambogia, a different species within the same genus. Goraka is widely used as a culinary souring agent and is commercially available across Sri Lanka. Garcinia spicata is a distinct species with its own phytochemical profile and is used primarily in Ayurvedic medicine rather than cooking.

Question 4

Where does Garcinia spicata grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is found naturally in the lowland and mid-elevation wet-zone forests of Sri Lanka, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces. The tree favours humid tropical conditions with well-drained soil and is most commonly encountered within or near intact forest patches.

Question 5

What compounds are found in Garcinia spicata?

Accepted Answer

Ethnobotanical and phytochemical studies have identified xanthones and polyphenolic compounds in the bark and heartwood of Garcinia spicata. The fruit rind is also believed to contain hydroxycitric acid derivatives, similar to other Garcinia species. Research specific to this species remains limited compared to the more extensively studied Garcinia cambogia.

Question 6

Can I buy Garcinia spicata products in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Products specifically labelled as Garcinia spicata are uncommon in mainstream retail. Most commercially available Garcinia products in Sri Lanka use Garcinia cambogia (Goraka) as their source material. For G. spicata specifically, your best avenue is a licensed Ayurvedic pharmacy or a practitioner who can source it from specialist suppliers.

Question 7

Is Garcinia spicata safe to consume?

Accepted Answer

As with all medicinal plants used in Ayurveda, Garcinia spicata should be consumed only under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic physician. Self-medicating with concentrated bark decoctions or root preparations is not advised. Pregnant women, people with liver conditions, and those on prescription medication should exercise particular caution with any Garcinia-based preparation.
