Question 1

What is the Dark Forest Damsel in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Dark Forest Damsel is a large endemic damselfly found only in Sri Lanka, belonging to the family Platystictidae. It reaches around two and a half inches in length and is recognisable by its dark body and distinctive blue abdominal tip. It lives exclusively in closed-canopy rainforests and cloud forests.

Question 2

Is the Dark Forest Damsel endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Dark Forest Damsel is entirely endemic to Sri Lanka and is not found anywhere else in the world. Its range is restricted to intact wet-zone rainforests, sub-montane forests, and montane cloud forests on the island.

Question 3

Where can I see the Dark Forest Damsel?

Accepted Answer

The best places to look for this species are undisturbed rainforest areas such as Sinharaja Forest Reserve, the Knuckles range, and cloud forests in the central highlands. It is typically found perching on low vegetation about a metre above the ground near shaded forest streams.

Question 4

How do I identify a Dark Forest Damsel?

Accepted Answer

Look for a relatively large damselfly with a predominantly dark body and a clear blue tip at the end of its abdomen. It is usually seen perching still on low stems or leaf surfaces in the forest understorey, in shade rather than open sunlight.

Question 5

What family does the Dark Forest Damsel belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to Platystictidae, which is the family with the highest number of damselfly species recorded in Sri Lanka. The family is strongly associated with shaded forest habitats and running or seeping water.

Question 6

Is the Dark Forest Damsel endangered?

Accepted Answer

The species is vulnerable to habitat loss because it cannot survive in open or heavily degraded landscapes. Deforestation and changes to riparian vegetation in Sri Lanka's wet zone are the primary threats. Its presence at a forest site is generally taken as a sign of good habitat quality.

Question 7

What is the difference between a damselfly and a dragonfly?

Accepted Answer

Damselflies are generally more slender than dragonflies and hold their wings folded back along the body when at rest, rather than spread out to the sides. Both belong to the order Odonata, but damselflies tend to be weaker fliers and are more often seen in sheltered, shaded microhabitats. The Dark Forest Damsel is a particularly large member of this typically slender group.

Question 8

What plants does the Dark Forest Damsel lay its eggs in?

Accepted Answer

Females insert their eggs into the soft stems of herbaceous plants growing close to forest streams, a method known as endophytic oviposition. This protects the eggs from drying out and from many predators. The larvae then develop in the leaf litter and root tangles of the adjacent stream bed.
