Question 1

What is Cassia roxburghii used for in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In traditional Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, Cassia roxburghii is used primarily for its digestive and laxative properties, derived mainly from the seeds and pods. Leaf preparations are applied topically for certain skin complaints, and bark extracts are used in remedies associated with fever management. It is generally combined with other plant materials in classical formulations rather than used in isolation.

Question 2

Is Cassia roxburghii native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cassia roxburghii is native to South Asia broadly, including Sri Lanka, India, and parts of Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka it grows naturally in dry lowland forests and scrublands, particularly in the northern, north central, and eastern regions of the island. It is also cultivated in botanical and ayurvedic gardens for research and educational purposes.

Question 3

What family does Cassia roxburghii belong to?

Accepted Answer

Cassia roxburghii belongs to the family Fabaceae, the legume family, and specifically to the subfamily Caesalpinioideae. It retains its Cassia genus classification in most current botanical references, though the broader Cassia genus has been substantially reorganised over recent decades, with many species moved to the genera Senna or Chamaecrista.

Question 4

Where can I see Cassia roxburghii in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows naturally along roadsides, in dry-zone forest margins, and within protected areas of northern and north-central Sri Lanka. Ayurvedic wellness centres and botanical gardens across the island often cultivate it as part of medicinal plant collections. Guided botanical walks offered by some resorts and ayurvedic institutes are a reliable way to identify it with expert interpretation.

Question 5

What does Cassia roxburghii look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a medium-sized deciduous tree growing up to roughly twelve metres tall, with pinnate leaves arranged in pairs and clusters of pale pink to salmon-coloured flowers. Its most recognisable feature is the very long, dark cylindrical seed pods that can reach 60 centimetres or more in length. The bark is rough and greyish-brown.

Question 6

What is the ayurvedic catalogue reference for Cassia roxburghii in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda catalogues Cassia roxburghii under the reference code LK94006419 as part of the official list of ayurvedic medicinal plants recognised on the island. This classification supports regulated use in licensed ayurvedic preparations and helps preserve indigenous botanical knowledge.

Question 7

Is Cassia roxburghii the same as Senna or Ceylon Senna?

Accepted Answer

Cassia roxburghii is closely related to plants in the Senna genus and shares common names that sometimes overlap, including references to 'Ceylon Senna.' Taxonomically it remains under Cassia in most references, distinguishing it from species formally reclassified into Senna, such as Senna alata or Senna tora, though all belong to the same broader legume subfamily and share some traditional applications.
