About this experience
Departing from your Weligama hotel, your private, air-conditioned vehicle heads north along the coast for a full nine hours of exploration. Your English-speaking chauffeur guide leads you first to Lunuganga, the former country estate of legendary architect Sir Geoffrey Bawa — a landscape garden unlike anything else on the island. From there, you descend into the Meetiyagoda Moonstone Mines, where Sri Lanka's famed blue moonstones are extracted from the earth in a centuries-old tradition.
The final stop is Balapitiya, where you board a boat for a safari along the Madu River — weaving through mangrove channels and spotting wildlife along the waterways. A water bottle per person is included, and your chauffeur guide handles the full journey from hotel pickup to drop-off. Entrance fees and meals are not included, so carry some local currency for the sites along the way.
