Question 1

What is Vigna unguiculata ssp. Sesquipedalis?

Accepted Answer

It is the yard-long bean, a climbing legume subspecies of cowpea cultivated widely across South and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka it is grown for its exceptionally long edible pods, harvested young and cooked as a vegetable. It also appears in the national catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for the yard-long bean?

Accepted Answer

In Sinhala the plant is commonly referred to as mē karal (මේ කරල්). Regional names and dialect variants exist across different parts of Sri Lanka, but this is the most widely recognised term.

Question 3

Is the yard-long bean used in Sri Lankan ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, though primarily as a functional dietary plant rather than a primary therapeutic herb. The seeds, pods, and leaves have been noted in traditional practice for digestive and diuretic benefits. Its inclusion in Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic plant catalogue reflects this dual culinary and medicinal identity.

Question 4

How do you cook yard-long beans in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The most common preparations are coconut milk curries, dry stir-fries tempered with mustard seeds and green chilli, and onion-turmeric tempering. Pods are sliced before cooking and are typically served with steamed rice and other vegetable or lentil dishes.

Question 5

What is the nutritional value of yard-long beans?

Accepted Answer

Yard-long beans provide dietary fibre, folate, iron, and potassium. Immature pods are low in calories while offering a useful amount of plant protein. Dried mature seeds contain higher protein levels and can be cooked whole or ground into flour.

Question 6

How quickly do yard-long beans grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Under warm lowland conditions typical of Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, the plant reaches harvestable pod size within roughly 60–70 days of sowing. It is a productive crop that continues yielding over several weeks if pods are harvested regularly before the seeds harden.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant heritage?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Indigenous Medicine maintains documentation on the country's medicinal plant catalogue. Visitors can experience living herbal traditions at ayurvedic centres and village gardens, particularly around Kandy and the Central Province, where practitioners have preserved botanical knowledge across generations.
