Bundala National Park sits on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, in the Hambantota District, a landscape of dry scrub and shallow brackish lagoons that has drawn ornithologists and curious travellers alike since it became the country's first Ramsar-listed wetland in 1991. This full-day safari collects you from your hotel in Ahungalla and carries you south by private, air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking chauffeur guide, before handing you over to a dedicated safari driver and tracker for a three-hour game drive inside the park itself.
What makes Bundala worth the journey is the sheer density of life packed into a relatively small, flat terrain. Four lagoons - Koholankala, Malala, Embilikala and Bundala - draw in waterbirds from across two continents, and the park's bird list runs to roughly two hundred species, including the greater flamingo, which arrives in striking pink flocks during the migratory season. You will travel in an open-sided 4x4, bumping along dirt tracks bordered by dense scrub and open grassland, scanning for elephants moving in loose herds between the trees and the water's edge. Sightings are not staged - elephants here, along with crocodiles and monitor lizards, go about their own business, and your tracker's job is to read the signs and put you in the right place at the right time. Bring binoculars and a camera with some reach, since much of what Bundala has to offer rewards patience and a good eye rather than proximity.
The day is built around straightforward logistics. Pickup and drop-off at your Ahungalla hotel are included, along with the air-conditioned transfer vehicle, the chauffeur guide for the road journey, and the jeep and driver-tracker for the safari itself. Entrance tickets to Bundala National Park are not included and should be arranged separately, and food, drinks and gratuities are also left to your discretion. The excursion runs across a full day, suits travellers aged five and up, and is arranged as a private tour for your own party rather than a shared group.
Beyond the wildlife, Bundala carries a quieter kind of significance - it was upgraded from sanctuary to national park status in 1993 and recognised as a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 2005, one of only a handful in Sri Lanka. For anyone who prefers their safari with fewer crowds than the island's more famous parks, and a genuine wetland ecosystem rather than open savannah, a day spent here on the tracks between lagoon and scrub is time well used.
