Question 1

What is the difference between Vandana Gatha and Pirith?

Accepted Answer

Vandana Gatha are devotional verses used to pay homage to the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha, and are typically recited at the start of any act of worship. Pirith are specific suttas chanted for protection and blessings, believed to ward off misfortune. Both are central to Sri Lankan Theravada practice but serve distinct purposes.

Question 2

What does 'Pirith' mean in Buddhism?

Accepted Answer

Pirith comes from the Pali word paritta, meaning protection. In Sri Lankan Buddhist practice it refers to a set of discourses attributed to the Buddha that are chanted aloud to invoke safety, well-being, and merit for the participants and the wider community.

Question 3

How long does a Pirith ceremony last?

Accepted Answer

The duration varies with the occasion. A standard household Pirith session conducted by a small group of monks may last two to three hours, while ceremonial events — Maha Pirith — can continue for 24 to 72 hours with monks chanting in relay. Major public ceremonies around national or religious occasions often span multiple days.

Question 4

What is the pirith nool thread used in Pirith ceremonies?

Accepted Answer

The pirith nool is a length of white cotton thread held by the officiating monks and stretched around the ceremonial space during chanting. It is believed to absorb the protective power of the recitation. At the close of the ceremony, sections of the thread are tied around the wrists of lay participants as a mark of blessing.

Question 5

When can tourists witness Pirith chanting in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Pirith chanting takes place regularly at working temples throughout Sri Lanka, with sessions most frequent on Poya (full-moon) days, which are public holidays. Early morning is the most common time for temple recitations. Kandy, with its dense concentration of active temples, is one of the best places to observe the practice.

Question 6

What is the Metta Sutta and is it part of Pirith?

Accepted Answer

The Metta Sutta, or Karaniya Metta Sutta, is a discourse on loving-kindness and one of the most frequently chanted texts in the Sri Lankan Pirith tradition. It is recited both as a protective sutta and as a meditative practice, cultivating goodwill toward all living beings.

Question 7

Are Vandana Gatha taught in Sri Lankan schools?

Accepted Answer

Yes, they are a core part of the Dhamma School (Daham Pasala) curriculum, which operates nationally on Sunday mornings for Buddhist children. From around age five, students begin memorising the standard Vandana Gatha sequence before progressing to more advanced texts. State schools also incorporate Vandana Gatha into morning assembly routines.

Question 8

Can I buy Vandana Gatha and Pirith books or recordings in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Printed collections combining Vandana Gatha and principal Pirith suttas are available at bookshops near major temples and in general bookstores across the island. Audio recordings produced by monastic institutions are sold on CD and available digitally, and make practical learning aids for both residents and those in the Sri Lankan diaspora.
