Villa Ranmenika in Ahungalla has one of the more endearing origin stories among Sri Lanka's smaller boutique properties. What began as a holiday encounter in 1986 grew into a decades-long commitment to this stretch of Sri Lankan coastline — and to one very special elephant.

How It All Began

The chair lady of Villa Ranmenika was holidaying in Sri Lanka in 1986 when she was captivated by an elephant greeting guests at the hotel where she was staying. So taken was she by the experience that she purchased the elephant for herself. That single moment of connection set everything else in motion.

A Home Built Around an Elephant

With an elephant to care for, she needed land — and the right land at that. She invested in the present property in Ahungalla with the specific intention of giving the elephant the best possible care and protection. Her affection ran so deep that she built a dedicated pool and house for the elephant on the grounds. The visits to Sri Lanka became more and more frequent, until Sri Lanka itself became her home.

The Villa Today

The villa opened its doors to guests in 2001 as a fully fledged, Tourist Board approved three-star property. It welcomes both foreign and local tourists, offering a stay set against the backdrop of this quietly remarkable story — one that started not with a business plan, but with the greeting of an elephant on a holiday afternoon.
