Kukuleganga Holiday Resort, Mathugama
Nestled in the environs of the Sinharaja natural reserve, Kukuleganga Holiday Resort is a recently constructed complex that offers a quiet and verdant escape from the pace of city life. Managed by the Institute of Peace Support Operations Training Sri Lanka, the resort draws both local and foreign guests seeking a relaxed weekend retreat surrounded by lush green tea and rubber estates.
The main approach to Kukuleganga is via Kalutara, though several routes lead to the location. Set well away from the hustle and bustle, the resort benefits from the cool climatic influence of its surroundings. Temperatures throughout the year range between 24°C and 32°C, with no prolonged droughts or extreme heat. Morning mist can wrap the landscape in a silky blanket, lending the hills a quality not unlike an Italian mountainous village, while light drizzle on the mountain peaks is a natural and refreshing occurrence. The entire area lies within the wet zone of Sri Lanka.
Facilities
The resort complex is well equipped for leisure and recreation. Guests have access to a Club House, Swimming Pool, Play Area, Tennis Court, Squash Court, Gymnasium, and walking trails, among other amenities — a range of offerings that makes it suitable for families, couples, and groups alike.
Accommodation
Villas at Kukuleganga are categorised into three types — A, B, and C — with space, facilities, and standards ascending from type A through to type B. All villas are fully air-conditioned and well furnished, each featuring sitting and dining areas as well as a pantry.
Type A — Single Bedroom Villas
The Type A villa is ideal for two adults or honeymooners. It features a double bedroom along with sitting and dining areas and a well-equipped pantry. Unlike the other villa types, it does not include a washing machine or dryer.
Type C — Two Bedroom Villas
Type C villas accommodate up to four adult guests. They offer two bedrooms, a sitting and dining area, a pantry with the required electrical appliances and cooking utensils, one bathroom, a washing machine and dryer, a telephone, and a television. There is no dedicated space for domestic helpers within this villa type.
Type B — Three Bedroom Villas
The most spacious option, Type B villas are suited for up to six adult guests, with children under twelve permitted to accompany their parents. Three double-bedded bedrooms are complemented by sitting and dining areas, a pantry with electrical appliances and cooking utensils, two bathrooms, a washing machine and dryer, a telephone, and a television. A notable feature is a small living area with an attached separate bathroom within the villa itself, designed for domestic helpers travelling with the family.
Value and Pricing
Accommodation charges have been set at a moderate and reasonable level intended to suit guests of all budgets. Rates are subject to periodic fluctuation, and concessions may be offered to guests staying on non-holiday periods.
