Laya Leisure sits at Kukule Ganga in the Mathugama area, among rubber and tea estates in the wet zone at the foothills of the Sinharaja Rainforest. Mathugama town is about 20 km away, and Kalawana (18.3 km) is the nearest town on the other side. The resort is run and managed by the Sri Lanka Army leisure sector, and the easiest road in is via Kalutara.
Laya Leisure is 76 km as the crow flies from Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, and about 93 km by road, a drive of usually 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. Taxi services are available from the airport at any time. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Laya Leisure.
Accommodation is in villas, in three categories: A, B and C type. All units are fully air-conditioned and well furnished, with modern amenities, and suit families and groups of friends looking for a quiet holiday surrounded by nature.
The club house has a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, and an air-conditioned bar. There is a floodlit, air-conditioned gymnasium with an instructor, a swimming pool with a sauna and steam bath beside it, and a spa with physiotherapy treatments. Children have their own pool and a children's park, and other activities include archery, a pool table, mountain biking, pony rides, and a free zone with a dancing hall and open area, with camp fires and barbecues to music from a local band.
The villages and green countryside around Mathugama are easy to explore on foot or by bike. With time in hand, take an excursion to the Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve, a biodiversity hotspot known for its endemic reptiles, amphibians, trees, insects, birds and mammals. The forest is dense, so wildlife is not easily seen, but the purple-faced langur is the mammal you are most likely to spot, and the trek suits nature lovers.
