Ulagalla Resort, Anuradhapura — A Sanctuary in Sri Lanka's Cultural Heartland

Nestled in the quiet hamlet of Tirappane, Ulagalla Resort is a rare retreat that draws together Sri Lanka's living agricultural traditions, ancient heritage, and considered luxury. The resort comprises 25 detached luxury chalets, each offering 800 square feet of floor space that includes a separate living area, a tranquil private courtyard, and a private plunge pool. They are scattered across the estate in a manner that preserves both privacy and serenity, with most overlooking one of the ancient reservoirs and others facing the flourishing paddy fields that surround the property. The chalets are also designed to accommodate guests with mobility requirements comfortably.

Agrotourism and the Living Landscape

One of the more distinctive aspects of Ulagalla is its commitment to agrotourism. The paddy and vegetable fields that border the chalets are not merely decorative — they offer guests a genuine opportunity to experience the traditions of paddy cultivation in Sri Lanka first-hand. Environmental responsibility is central to the resort's design. The majority of the structures were built using Durra, a green building material, and the resort is pursuing LEED certification. No trees were felled during construction; instead, 1,000 root-balled trees were planted on the property. Fifty per cent of the resort's energy requirement is intended to be generated through solar power, and the resort houses what was, at the time, the largest solar farm in the country, with a capacity of 125 KVA.

A team of qualified chefs prepares gourmet cuisine tailored to the individual needs of each guest, drawing on the organic produce cultivated on-site.
