Teak House, Tangalle — A Hilltop Villa on Sri Lanka's South Coast

Perched on a hilltop within a lush tropical garden and an immaculately kept coconut plantation, The Teak House is one of Sri Lanka's South Coast's most romantic and serene villa hideaways. Situated in Tangalle, approximately 190 km south of Colombo, it sits moments from an unspoilt stretch of the Indian Ocean, offering luxury and privacy in equal measure.

Constructed entirely of teak — one of Sri Lanka's sustainable hardwoods — the villa is hidden from view yet commands an elevated position overlooking Seenimodera beach. Constant breezes from the Indian Ocean flow through the vast bedrooms and open-plan living spaces, making ceiling fans rarely a necessity. Seven-foot, four-poster beds draped in fine white mosquito nets and the finest linen ensure that rest comes effortlessly, lulled by the rhythm of waves breaking on the shore below.

High ceilings and open shutters are designed to channel the sea breeze throughout each room. Every bedroom benefits from an ensuite shower room finished with polished cement walls and a reliable supply of hot water. Additional single beds and mosquito nets can be arranged for extra guests or children, making the villa well suited to both romantic escapes and gatherings of friends.

The Garden and Wildlife

Planted with an exotic collection of tropical flora, The Teak House garden has become a haven for a remarkable variety of birds. Woodpeckers, peacocks, birds of paradise, kingfishers, and the busy "chit chat" birds all thrive in its lush surroundings. Sea eagles hover overhead, and as dusk falls and a dark tropical night descends, fireflies illuminate the sky.

Seenimodera and the Coastline

Renowned as one of Sri Lanka's most picturesque and unspoilt sandy beaches, Seenimodera offers safe swimming throughout the year as well as incomparable walking. From the beach it is a short stroll across to neighbouring Mahawella beach — a horseshoe-shaped bay of over 3 km, long celebrated by CN Traveller magazine. The villa's position also makes it an ideal base from which to explore Tangalle's wild stretch of coastline and visit nearby wildlife parks, historical towns, and temples.

Cuisine

Food at The Teak House draws on the abundance of its surroundings. Fresh tropical fruit and seafood straight from the Indian Ocean form the foundation of the kitchen's repertoire — pan-fried fillets of freshly caught seer fish with capers is one example of the dishes on offer. House curries are particularly renowned, drawing on ingredients such as prawns from the ocean and the lagoon, banana flower, gourds, and breadfruit, alongside produce grown within a short distance of Tangalle or sourced from the cooler hill country. For those who wish to dine out, options include Wini's well-regarded seafood on Goyambokka beach and the five-star Amanwella hotel, less than five minutes away.

Getting There

The Teak House lies some 190 km south of Colombo. Moments before the 191 km marker on the Galle Road, directly opposite the gates to Seenimodera temple, a right turn onto a dirt road on the sea side leads to the villa at the end of the road on the right-hand side.
