South Point Villa, Ahangama — A Private Coastal Retreat

Tucked away in the village of Kathaluwa in Ahangama, South Point Villa is a three-bedroom private villa designed for guests who prize seclusion and calm above all else. Located a few kilometres south of Galle along Sri Lanka's Southern coast, it suits families, couples, and groups of friends equally well. Many of its doors and windows date back to the Dutch and British eras of the island's history, lending the spacious interior a quiet sense of heritage alongside its stylish furnishings.

The villa sits approximately 133 km from Colombo, roughly 3.5 hours by road. Guests preferring a faster approach can take a Sri Lankan Air Taxi flight from Colombo to the Koggala air base — a journey of about 45 minutes — followed by a 10-minute drive to the villa.

Accommodation

Each of the three bedrooms carries its own character. The Master Bedroom looks out over the ocean through mangroves and opens to the garden via large sliding windows. It features a king-size four-poster bed with mosquito nets, teak flooring, air-conditioning, a fan, and a television. The attached bathroom offers wooden vanity counters, his-and-her wash basins, a rainfall shower, and hot and cold water.

The Sea Room frames a spectacular ocean view, with sliding windows that open directly onto the wooden deck. Two queen-size four-poster beds, wooden floors, and a rainfall shower bathroom make it adaptable as a family room. The Pond Room, meanwhile, overlooks a carp pond planted with water lilies, and is furnished with a king-size four-poster bed and a similarly well-appointed bathroom. All three rooms include mosquito nets, air-conditioning, a fan, and herbal shampoo and ceramic containers in the bathrooms.

Dining and Facilities

Dining at South Point Villa is treated as an experience in itself. Guests choose where they eat — the dining room, the veranda, or the garden — and the staff take pride in laying a proper table spread, complete with flowers. The resident chef excels in fine dining and seafood, ranging from Sri Lankan breakfast specialties and barbeques to fresh lobster. Guests are welcome to bring their own wines and alcohol, and may also step into the kitchen to prepare dishes alongside the chef.

For leisure, the villa offers a sapphire-blue freshwater infinity pool and a jacuzzi bench on the spacious, well-furnished deck. The garden, shaded by trees and mangroves, is laid with comfortable lounge chairs facing the ocean. Practical amenities include airport pick-up on request, wireless internet, laundry facilities, and round-the-clock security through a team that includes a housekeeper, maid, houseboy, gardener, night watchman, and supervisor.

Excursions and Activities

The coral pools directly in front of the villa are well suited to snorkelling, and diving equipment can be hired locally. Boats and fishing gear are available nearby for deep-sea trolling. A short walk from the property leads to a surfing bay where boards can be hired. Closer cultural excursions include the turtle hatchery, the Dutch Fort in Galle, the Hadunagoda Tea Factory, and the Koggala Lake. About three hours from the villa lie the wildlife parks of Yala National Park and the Udawalawe Reserve, where visitors may spot elephants and, with some luck, a leopard or a bear.
