South Point Cottage, Ahangama — A Lakeside Retreat

Tucked among tall trees on the banks of Koggala Lake, South Point Cottage is a serene and private hideaway in the town of Ahangama, south of Galle. Rustic in character yet quietly elegant, the two-level cottage is designed for guests who want to step away from the pace of everyday life — whether for a short break or a longer, more contemplative stay.

The cottage has often been described as an ideal writer's retreat, and it is easy to understand why. Absolute privacy, a well-maintained garden, and the gentle rhythms of a rural Sri Lankan village combine to make it a genuinely restorative place.

Getting There

South Point Cottage sits about a five-minute drive inland from the 133 km post from Colombo. The road journey from Colombo takes approximately three and a half hours. For those preferring a faster connection, Sri Lankan Air Taxi flights operate between Katunayake International Airport and the nearby Koggala Airport.

Accommodation

The cottage is spread across two levels and offers three bedrooms in total. On the first floor, a large en suite bedroom looks out over Koggala Lake and the distant hills. It is furnished with a king-size four-poster bed draped in mosquito nets, a ceiling fan, a balcony facing the lake, a television, a DVD player, and a music setup. The attached bathroom features his-and-her wash basins, a rainfall shower, and hot and cold water.

On the ground floor, two bedrooms each contain two single beds, mosquito nets, fans, and modern attached bathrooms with rainfall showers and hot and cold water. One of the ground-floor bedrooms has a connecting door to the room upstairs, making it well suited for families or small groups.

Facilities and Dining

A large, spacious kitchen anchors the cottage's facilities. Guests on longer stays can purchase lagoon crabs, prawns, and fresh fish directly from fishermen as their boats glide past the property. The resident chef is happy to prepare gourmet meals to individual preference, and guests are welcome to dine wherever and whenever they choose — or even step into the kitchen and lend a hand. Spacious verandas on either side and at the front of the cottage open directly onto the garden. A swimming pool is also available, and a private pier provides an ideal vantage point in the evenings to watch the quiet activity on Koggala Lake. A full staff — including a chef, houseboy, night watchman, and manager — is on hand throughout each stay.

Excursions and Activities

The surrounding area offers a calm but varied range of experiences. Walks through the village give guests a genuine glimpse into Sri Lanka's rural way of life, and an ancient Buddhist temple adjoining the garden means that Buddhist ceremonies are a natural and unhurried part of the atmosphere. On the water, guests can enjoy paddle boats, local canoes, kayaks, and motor boats, as well as still fishing and lakeside strolls. The nearby beach opens up further possibilities, including snorkelling in coral pools and surfing in fine weather.
