The ideal season to visit this part of the island is generally considered to be between April and October. The area around Trincomalee rewards those who venture beyond the beach. On the eastern side of Trincomalee town stands Fort Frederick, first used by the Portuguese in 1624, later occupied by the Dutch and renamed by the British in 1803 to honour the Duke of York. At the northern tip of the fort rises Swami Rock, a cliff that drops more than 100 metres directly into the sea — a dramatic plunge known, according to an old legend, as the "lovers leap". The Tirukonesvaram Kovil crowns the highest point of the cliff above.

Pigeon Island, a short distance offshore from Nilaveli Beach, is a popular destination for snorkelling excursions, reachable by a roughly 10-minute boat ride. The island serves as a breeding site for the Blue Rock Pigeon. Whale watching is another rewarding activity in this part of Sri Lanka, where more than 12 different species have been recorded in the surrounding waters.
