Mannar Island and District, Sri Lanka
Mannar lies 325 kilometres north of Colombo, at the far northwestern edge of Sri Lanka's Northern Province. The district encompasses both a stretch of mainland territory and Mannar Island — considered the largest islet in the country — and the journey there takes travellers through the dry zone, where wooded jungles gradually give way to paddy fields and groves of palm trees.
The regular route from Colombo passes through Anuradhapura and Madawachchiya, following the A14 road that eventually becomes the main artery connecting Madawachchiya to Talaimannar.
Mannar District
The landscape of Mannar district is one of quiet contrasts. Dry, sun-baked terrain defines much of the region, yet pockets of cultivation and greenery break the arid horizon. The district's character is shaped as much by its geography — straddling mainland and island — as by its long history as a point of crossing between Sri Lanka and southern India.
Mannar Island
Despite being commonly referred to as an islet, Mannar Island is in fact a peninsula, formed in the shape of a tongue extending into the sea. At Talaimanar, its westernmost tip, the land comes remarkably close to Dhanuskodi — the easternmost point of the Indian peninsula — separated only by a reef of corals submerged beneath the Palk Straits.
The island is connected to the mainland in two ways: by the thin strip of land that forms the peninsula itself, and by a causeway that spans the shallow waters along a 3-kilometre stretch of the A14 Madawachchiya–Talaimannar main road. On its southeastern shore sits a small fishing port, which remains central to the life and livelihood of the local community.
A Place of Many Names
Mannar Island has been known historically by several names — among them Manthei, Mathota, Mahathiththa, Mahaputu, and Mawatuthota — each reflecting the many cultures and civilisations that have passed through this strategic crossing point over the centuries.
