Kosgoda Beach Resort — A Coastal Retreat in Sri Lanka

Kosgoda Beach Resort occupies a secluded coconut grove on the south-western coastline of Sri Lanka, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Situated approximately 75 km south of Colombo and about 105 km from the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, the resort is reached most conveniently via the Colombo–Galle main motor way that runs along the coast, though public buses and trains also serve the area. The coastal village of Kosgoda lends the property its quietly calm and unhurried character — a quality that makes it a natural choice for those seeking genuine rest by the sea.

At the back of the hotel, a river lagoon adds a further layer of natural charm, framing the property between the Indian Ocean on one side and still, bird-rich water on the other.

Accommodation

The resort offers 29 Deluxe Rooms, 12 Suites and 1 Grand Suite, all linked by a series of walkways bordered by frangipani in different shades. Every room has been furnished with pieces hand-picked to blend with the colours of the surrounding environment.

Deluxe Rooms are single-storey with spacious bedrooms and open-air bathrooms. A glass door opens onto a private sundeck fitted with individual deck chairs. Some rooms look out over the Indian Ocean, others face the swimming pool as it winds around the property, and a further set is placed discreetly among the palms with views of the lagoon.

Suites are free-standing Villa Duplexes, well spaced among the lush foliage and individually styled, each offering views of the sea. The Grand Suite provides undisturbed vistas of the garden and the lagoon beyond, and guests staying there may enjoy a breakfast of their choice in complete privacy.

Dining and Facilities

The resort's restaurant serves meals both buffet and à la carte, with a menu spanning local, European and seafood specialties. The large swimming pool, which winds around the grounds, is open at all times and invites long, leisurely swims. Water sports are also available within close proximity of the resort.

Excursions and Surroundings

The resort's own boatman is available to take guests along the lagoon, where both resident and migrant bird species can be observed. Kosgoda is also noted as a site where giant leatherback turtles come ashore to lay eggs and where newly hatched turtles make their way back to the sea — a spectacle of considerable natural interest.

Roughly an hour's drive from the resort lie natural moonstone mines worth exploring. In the same direction, the Port of Galle is considered a must-see destination. The 36-hectare Dutch fort within Galle, built in 1663, has endured the centuries remarkably well and vividly illustrates the Dutch presence in Sri Lanka. Inside the fort, the National Maritime Museum displays flora and fauna of the sea alongside preserved material and scaled models of whales and fish.
