Hempel House: A Colonial Retreat Near Galle Fort

Hempel House is a colonial-period residence built around a central courtyard, where a pond filled with tropical fish and turtles sits beneath the shade of a sweet-scented frangipani tree. Tastefully restored by the Hempel Family, who have been living there for the last seven years, the house retains much of its original character while offering the comforts expected of a well-appointed holiday home.

The property sits within a lush tropical garden that has become something of a bird watcher's paradise. Monkeys, mongoose, monitor lizards and squirrels dart amongst the trees, giving the garden a lively, wild quality that feels a world away from the bustle of the nearby coast.

Accommodation

The house sleeps eight adults comfortably, with extra beds available on request. A beautiful upstairs master bedroom with air conditioning features an inside-outside bathroom, and three further double bedrooms each have ensuite bathrooms, two of which are also air-conditioned. Two separate living rooms and an outside-inside dining area provide generous space for gathering, while a fully equipped modern kitchen, washing and drying machines, and separate staff and driver quarters with their own facilities round out the practical amenities.

Facilities and the Pool

A 45-ft swimming pool with an adjoining Ambalama is the centrepiece of outdoor life at Hempel House. Parking for three cars, internet access and on-site staff — including a chef, house lady, gardener and night security — are all included. A chef or babysitter can also be arranged separately.

The resident chef, Nalani, offers a breakfast of the day that might be egg hoppers, string hoppers or a Sri Lankan omelette, or a more Western spread of bacon and poached eggs from the property's own organically fed chickens. Fresh tropical fruits, homemade bread and jam, and freshly brewed coffee or tea are served daily. With a little notice, Nalani can also prepare a Sri Lankan lunch or dinner built around the catch of the day — prawns, seer fish or tuna — accompanied by fresh garden salads, vegetables and homemade chutneys.

Personal Services

Guests can arrange Ayurvedic massage or yoga sessions at the house. For something more active, there is the option to hire a bicycle and cycle around the Dutch Fort, sift through aquamarines and sapphires with a local gem dealer, or watch Kandyan dances performed under the night sky at Hempel House itself.

Location and Excursions

Hempel House is just ten minutes from Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage-protected site — and fifteen minutes from the beaches of Unawatuna and Thalpe. Guests can swim at Thalpe beach, relax around the pool or explore the shops, restaurants and hotels of the Fort at their own pace. The surf beaches are within twenty to thirty minutes. Transport to and from the airport can be arranged, and locally a scooter, three-wheeler or private driver are all available for hire.
