Reef Villa & Spa

Wadduwa, Sri Lanka

Reef Villa & Spa is a small beach villa hotel in Wadduwa with just seven suites, set in three acres of tropical gardens beside the Indian Ocean. The rooms are furnished in an Indo-colonial style with antiques and Indian craftwork, and the grounds hold lily ponds, an infinity-edge pool and the Reefresh Spa, which makes it a quiet, private place for a beach holiday, a honeymoon or a small wedding.

Where is Reef Villa & Spa?

The villa stands on Samanthara Road in Wadduwa, on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, with its gardens running down to the beach and views out over the ocean. Wadduwa railway station, on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle, is about 0.5 km away, and the town centre is a short distance inland. Colombo is about a 40-minute drive to the north.

How do I get from Colombo Airport to Reef Villa & Spa?

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 75 km from the villa by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the coast usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Reef Villa & Spa.

What are the suites like?

There are seven suites, each individually designed and named after a flower of the island. The two Plantation House Suites, Manel and Nelum, look straight out to the ocean; the Lily Pond Suite is set on its own among the lily ponds; and the four Ocean Suites look over the gardens, the ponds and the sea. Every suite has an antique four-poster canopy bed under a high ceiling lined with Kerala terracotta tiles, hand-crafted floor tiles, a free-standing hand-carved bathtub, twin granite basins and a rain shower, plus shaded verandahs for relaxing or dining in private.

Where can I eat and drink?

Meals come from the villa's two kitchens and mix Sri Lankan and international cooking, with an à la carte menu, fresh seafood and barbecues. You can eat in the Summer Breeze restaurant, beside the pool, al fresco under the stars, or have your meal served on the verandah of your own suite.

What facilities does the villa have?

The Reefresh Spa offers scrubs, wraps, polishes, massages and Ayurvedic treatments in a garden pavilion. There is an infinity-edge pool with a jacuzzi, yoga sessions, tennis, table tennis, a 700 m jogging track, board games and a small library in the main house. A concierge service helps with excursions, and the villa arranges wedding and honeymoon packages.

What is there to do around Wadduwa?

Wadduwa is a quiet stretch of coast, so most days here are spent on the beach, by the pool or at the spa. Bentota, about 25 minutes to the south, is the place for water sports such as windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking, snorkelling and diving. Closer excursions include the Kalutara temple and Richmond Castle, and longer day trips reach the Kosgoda turtle hatcheries, Galle Fort and Mirissa for whale and dolphin watching in season. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the villa.
