Paththirippuwa, the iconic Octagonal Pavilion of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy, stands as one of the most recognizable architectural elements of the temple complex. Built during the reign of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in the early 19th century, the structure was originally designed as a royal audience hall, where the king addressed his subjects and observed ceremonies held in the temple square below.
Architecturally, Paththirippuwa is a masterpiece of Kandyan craftsmanship. The pavilion’s distinctive octagonal shape, intricate wooden balustrades, and tiered roof reflect the elegant artistry of the era. Elevated above the ground, it offers panoramic views of the Kandy Lake and surrounding cityscape. Today, the upper floor houses important historical manuscripts belonging to the Dalada Maligawa, including ola leaf records of Buddhist teachings and royal decrees.
Beyond its architectural beauty, Paththirippuwa symbolizes the deep connection between the monarchy and the Buddhist faith. It stands as a cultural icon of Sri Lanka, representing both the religious heritage and royal legacy of Kandy. For visitors, it is a serene and historically rich vantage point within one of the country’s most sacred sites.
