Question 1

What is the Mid Country in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Mid Country is the intermediate elevation zone of Sri Lanka, broadly sitting between 300 m and 1,000 m above sea level. It covers parts of Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Badulla districts and is characterised by tea estates, waterfalls, spice gardens, and cooler temperatures than the coastal lowlands.

Question 2

How long does the hill train ride through the Mid Country take?

Accepted Answer

The scenic train journey from Kandy to Ella takes approximately six to seven hours, depending on the service. The most celebrated section runs between Nanu Oya and Demodara, where the line passes through tea estates, over viaducts, and through rocky tunnels. First-class observation saloon seats should be booked well in advance.

Question 3

What is Mid Country tea and how does it differ from other Ceylon teas?

Accepted Answer

Mid Country teas are grown at elevations of roughly 600 m to 1,200 m in districts such as Kandy, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya's lower slopes. They tend to be full-bodied and brisk, with a rich colour in the cup — qualities that sit between the lighter, more delicate high-grown teas and the stronger, darker low-grown varieties produced at coastal elevations.

Question 4

What waterfalls can I visit in the Mid Country?

Accepted Answer

Devon Falls, St Clair's Falls, and Ramboda Falls are among the best-known waterfalls in the Mid Country, all located along or near the A7 highway between Hatton and Nuwara Eliya. They are most dramatic during and just after the monsoon season when water volume is highest. Most require only a short walk from roadside viewpoints.

Question 5

Which temples near Kandy are worth visiting in the Mid Country?

Accepted Answer

Lankathilaka Vihara, Gadaladeniya Temple, and Embekka Devale form a fourteenth-century temple circuit a short drive from Kandy and are among the finest examples of Kandyan-period architecture. Aluvihara Rock Temple near Matale is historically significant as the site where Theravada Buddhist scriptures were first recorded in writing.

Question 6

How many days do I need to explore the Mid Country?

Accepted Answer

Three to five days gives a reasonable introduction: a day in and around Kandy, a day on the train or driving through tea country, and at least one night at an estate bungalow or hill-station town like Hatton or Haputale. If you plan to cycle, add two additional days to allow for the pace of estate roads.

Question 7

Is it cold in the Mid Country at night?

Accepted Answer

Temperatures in the upper Mid Country — particularly around Hatton, Nuwara Eliya, and Haputale — can drop to single digits Celsius on clear nights, especially between December and February. The lower Mid Country around Kandy and Matale stays warmer. Packing a light jacket and a layer or two is advisable regardless of your travel season.

Question 8

Can I visit spice gardens in the Mid Country?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Matale district hosts numerous spice and herb gardens that are open to visitors for guided tours. Common spices cultivated here include cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, cloves, and nutmeg. Tours typically include a demonstration of traditional processing methods and an opportunity to purchase locally produced spice products.
