Amethyst Resort is a 38-room cabana resort at Pasikuda on Sri Lanka's east coast, set between the sheltered bay of Passikudah and a quiet stream. Its rooms either open onto the sand or face the stream, and there is an outdoor pool, a seafood restaurant by the water and a Mediterranean-style pub.
The rooms are single-storey cabanas, each with its own private verandah, air conditioning and a fan, a minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, a safe, a flat-screen television and a shower room with hot water and a hair dryer. The three names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Taprobane, the main restaurant, overlooks the stream and concentrates on seafood, turning the local catch into regional specialities. The Barrel is a Mediterranean-style pub with cocktails, beers and pub food, and the Cool Pool Bar serves light snacks and drinks beside the pool. The resort also lists a Dine on Barge experience; ask for details when you arrive.
Most days revolve around the beach and the pool. Passikudah Beach is known for its long, shallow, reef-protected bay, where the water stays calm and shallow a long way out, which suits children and less confident swimmers. Diving and other water sports can be arranged through the resort, and the east-coast beach season runs roughly from April to September.
Neighbouring Kalkudah Beach, just to the south, is usually much quieter. Batticaloa, about 28 kilometres south in a straight line, has an old Dutch fort and a huge lagoon dotted with islands, famous for its "singing fish". Inland, the ruins of the medieval capital at Polonnaruwa are about 60 kilometres away in a straight line, and make a full day out with the elephant reserve at Minneriya National Park.
Pasikuda is on the opposite side of the island from Bandaranaike International Airport, about 200 kilometres away in a straight line, and the drive across the country through the Cultural Triangle takes most of a day, so many travellers break the journey with a night or two in Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Amethyst Resort, which takes you all the way to the door. Trains on the Batticaloa line stop at Kalkudah station, close to the resort.
It suits families and couples who want an easy-going beach stay on the calm east coast, with a pool, simple cabana rooms and the bay's shallow water on the doorstep, rather than a high-end resort. Book a Sea View Room if being on the beach matters most. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Pasikuda.
