Step into a private, air-conditioned vehicle from your Habarana hotel and head west into Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. At Yapahuwa, climb the dramatic rock fortress that served as a royal capital in the 13th century — the ornate stone stairway and commanding views over the jungle make the ascent worthwhile. From there, your English-speaking chauffeur guide takes you deeper into the countryside to Sasseruwa, where a giant unfinished standing Buddha, carved directly into the rockface, stands in striking, unpolished contrast to the sites you'll see next.
The final stop is the Aukana Buddha Statue — one of the finest examples of ancient Sinhalese sculpture, rising over 12 metres and carved from a single granite face. Your guide provides context throughout, connecting the sites into a coherent picture of Sri Lanka's medieval kingdoms.
