A children's picture book in Sinhala, written by Sybil Wettasinghe as part of a series of new story books from her. It is short, set in large type, and illustrated in colour throughout — made for children in the primary grades who are reading on their own or being read to.
The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation, so a reader will need Sinhala to follow the story. Families abroad raising children in the language, Sinhala-medium classrooms and teachers building a home or school shelf are the natural audience. The large letterforms and the pacing of a few words to a page are the kind of thing that suits a child still working out how print and picture fit together.
Sybil Wettasinghe was a Sri Lankan writer and illustrator of books for children, and her drawings are as much the point here as the words. The publisher, M. D. Gunasena & Co., is a long-established Colombo house issuing books in Sinhala and English.
