A Sinhala children's story by Sybil Wettasinghe, one of a newer series of story books she wrote for young readers. The text is short and set in large type, which makes it suited to children in the primary grades, and the pages carry colour illustrations throughout.
The entire book is in Sinhala. There is no English text and no parallel translation, so buyers outside Sri Lanka should order it as a Sinhala-language title — for a child learning to read Sinhala, for a household keeping the language alive abroad, or for a collection of Wettasinghe's work.
Sybil Wettasinghe wrote and illustrated children's books in Sinhala over a long working life, and her picture books are familiar to generations of Sri Lankan readers who met them first at school or at home. Books of this kind are usually read aloud before a child reads them alone, and the large type and pictures are pitched at that stage.
