Question 1

What is Wedelia chinensis used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In ayurvedic and traditional medicine, Wedelia chinensis is used primarily for hair and scalp care, wound healing, liver support, and managing fever and respiratory complaints. Different parts of the plant — leaves, stems, and flowers — are prepared as decoctions, pastes, or expressed juices depending on the application. Consultation with a qualified ayurvedic physician is recommended before use.

Question 2

Where does Wedelia chinensis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows widely in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, favouring moist, open ground such as riverbanks, paddy-field margins, and roadsides. It is a low-growing perennial herb that can form dense mats in suitable conditions. Its wide natural distribution makes it one of the more accessible wild-harvested medicinal plants on the island.

Question 3

Is Wedelia chinensis the same as Eclipta prostrata?

Accepted Answer

Older botanical literature sometimes grouped Wedelia chinensis with Eclipta prostrata, but modern taxonomy treats them as distinct species within the Asteraceae family. They share some overlapping traditional uses, particularly around hair care and liver support, which accounts for the historical confusion between them.

Question 4

What active compounds are found in Wedelia chinensis?

Accepted Answer

Researchers have identified wedelolactone, luteolin, apigenin, and several other flavonoids and terpenoids in the plant. Wedelolactone in particular has drawn scientific interest for its potential anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and hair-growth-stimulating properties. Most evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, and clinical data in humans remains limited.

Question 5

Can Wedelia chinensis be used for hair growth?

Accepted Answer

Traditional practice in Sri Lanka and South India has long used leaf extracts of Wedelia chinensis applied to the scalp to support hair growth and address scalp conditions. Laboratory studies have found that wedelolactone, one of the plant's key compounds, shows activity in hair follicle-related pathways. However, robust clinical evidence from human trials is not yet established.

Question 6

Is Wedelia chinensis listed in Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic pharmacopoeia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Wedelia chinensis is included in the catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants recognised by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda. It is one of many species documented as part of Sri Lanka's formal effort to catalogue and validate the island's traditional plant medicine heritage.

Question 7

What family does Wedelia chinensis belong to?

Accepted Answer

Wedelia chinensis belongs to the Asteraceae family, the same large family that includes sunflowers, daisies, and chrysanthemums. Its small, bright yellow flowers have the typical composite structure characteristic of this family, which makes the plant recognisable when in bloom.
