Question 1

What is Vateria copallifera used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

The tree's resin, known as Dummala, is the primary medicinal product, used in Ayurvedic preparations for skin conditions, joint inflammation, and respiratory issues. The bark and seed oil also appear in traditional formulations. The resin is additionally burned as incense in Sri Lankan and South Indian ritual contexts.

Question 2

Is Vateria copallifera endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Vateria copallifera is considered endemic or near-endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it is not found naturally anywhere else in the world in significant numbers. A related species, Vateria indica, occurs in the Western Ghats of India, but the two are distinct. Sri Lanka's wet-zone rainforests represent the core habitat for V. copallifera.

Question 3

Is Vateria copallifera endangered?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the species is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to ongoing habitat loss in Sri Lanka's wet zone. Deforestation, agricultural expansion, and unsustainable resin extraction have contributed to population declines. Conservation efforts include both in-situ forest protection and ex-situ cultivation at botanical gardens.

Question 4

What is Dummala resin and how is it used?

Accepted Answer

Dummala is the pale, translucent resin that Vateria copallifera exudes from its bark. In Sri Lanka and South India it has been used for centuries as an ingredient in medicinal ointments, as incense in religious ceremonies, and historically as a coating material. Modern research has begun to investigate its phytochemical properties.

Question 5

Where in Sri Lanka does Vateria copallifera grow?

Accepted Answer

The tree is native to the lowland and submontane rainforests of Sri Lanka's wet zone, primarily in the southwestern quarter of the island. It favours undisturbed primary forest with high rainfall. Sinharaja Forest Reserve and other protected wet-zone patches are among the best remaining habitats for this species.

Question 6

Which plant family does Vateria copallifera belong to?

Accepted Answer

Vateria copallifera belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae, a group of large tropical trees well known for their resinous properties and ecological importance as canopy-forming species across South and Southeast Asia. Within Sri Lanka, several dipterocarp species are ecologically and economically significant.

Question 7

Can I see Vateria copallifera when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The most reliable way to encounter this tree is on a guided nature walk through a wet-zone rainforest such as Sinharaja. Botanical gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy also maintain specimens. Experienced local naturalist guides can identify the tree by its resin, bark, and leaf characteristics in the field.
