Question 1

What is Utricularia bifida?

Accepted Answer

Utricularia bifida is a small carnivorous bladderwort plant belonging to the family Lentibulariaceae. It grows in waterlogged, nutrient-poor soils and shallow wetlands, trapping tiny aquatic organisms using microscopic bladder-like structures on its stolons. It is documented as an ayurvedic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka.

Question 2

Is Utricularia bifida a carnivorous plant?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Like all Utricularia species, it is carnivorous. It captures small invertebrates and micro-organisms using passive suction traps called bladders, which fire when trigger hairs at the entrance are disturbed. This supplements the plant's nutrient intake in soils where nitrogen and phosphorus are scarce.

Question 3

Where can Utricularia bifida be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows primarily in the wet zone lowlands of southwestern Sri Lanka, in waterlogged grasslands, paddy field margins, and freshwater wetland edges. It can also appear in montane seepages at higher elevations where soils remain consistently moist and nutrient-poor.

Question 4

How is Utricularia bifida used in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and broader South Asian traditional medicine, Utricularia species have been used in preparations associated with urinary tract health, skin conditions, and inflammation. The whole plant is typically used, prepared as a decoction or paste. Its inclusion in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic catalog reflects documented traditional use rather than fully validated clinical data.

Question 5

What does the name 'bifida' mean in Utricularia bifida?

Accepted Answer

The species epithet bifida is Latin for 'divided into two parts' or 'two-lobed.' It refers to a characteristic two-lobed structure in the plant's floral anatomy, distinguishing it from closely related bladderwort species found in the same region.

Question 6

Is Utricularia bifida endangered in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not formally listed as protected under Sri Lanka's Forest Ordinance, but its wetland habitats are under pressure from agricultural drainage, herbicide use, and land development. Conservation of low-nutrient wetland environments is considered the most effective protection for the species.

Question 7

How is Utricularia bifida different from other bladderworts in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka hosts several Utricularia species, including U. reticulata and U. graminifolia. U. bifida is distinguished by its two-lobed floral structures and is one of the more widespread species on the island. All share the same carnivorous trapping mechanism, but differ in habitat preference and floral detail.

Question 8

When is the best time to look for Utricularia bifida in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant flowers most reliably during and after the southwest monsoon, typically between May and September, when lowland wetlands are at their wettest. Shallow grassy areas adjacent to paddy fields in the wet zone are the most accessible places to look. A hand lens helps with identification.
