Question 1

What is Trichosanthes tricuspida used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, Trichosanthes tricuspida is used primarily for its root, which is attributed with purgative, anti-inflammatory, and fever-relieving properties. The leaves and fruit have also been applied in topical folk remedies for skin conditions. Its use is documented in the official catalog of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda.

Question 2

Is Trichosanthes tricuspida native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it occurs naturally in Sri Lanka, particularly in the wet and intermediate zones at lower to mid elevations. The species also grows across tropical South and Southeast Asia, including India and southern China. In Sri Lanka it is typically found along forest margins and in secondary or disturbed forest habitats.

Question 3

Is Trichosanthes tricuspida the same as snake gourd?

Accepted Answer

No. Trichosanthes tricuspida and Trichosanthes cucumerina (snake gourd) are related but distinct species. Snake gourd is a common vegetable widely cultivated for food in Sri Lanka, while Trichosanthes tricuspida is a wild species used primarily for medicinal purposes and is not generally consumed as a vegetable.

Question 4

What parts of Trichosanthes tricuspida are used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The root is the most frequently referenced part in classical Ayurvedic literature, though the leaves and fruit are also used in traditional folk preparations. The root is prepared as a decoction or extract for internal use, while leaf-based preparations are sometimes applied topically to the skin.

Question 5

Does Trichosanthes tricuspida have any scientifically studied properties?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have detected cucurbitacins, flavonoids, and saponins in the plant — compound classes associated with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity in broader botanical research. However, comprehensive clinical trials are limited, and these findings should not be interpreted as medical validation of traditional uses without further study.

Question 6

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant traditions?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Institute of Indigenous Medicine at the University of Colombo is a leading academic institution for research and documentation of Ayurvedic botany. The Department of Ayurveda also maintains official records of medicinal plants. Visitors can explore Ayurvedic wellness centres across the island for a hands-on experience of these traditions.

Question 7

Is Trichosanthes tricuspida endangered in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not considered threatened. It tolerates disturbed environments well and is recorded across multiple provinces in Sri Lanka. Its ability to colonise forest margins and secondary habitats means it remains relatively common despite land-use changes in many parts of the island.
