Question 1

What is Syzygium makul used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, Syzygium makul is primarily used for its bark, which is prepared as a decoction associated with digestive and metabolic health. Folk medicine also records use of its leaves in topical applications. Modern pharmacological research into these properties is still ongoing.

Question 2

Is Syzygium makul endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Syzygium makul is native to Sri Lanka and parts of southern India, and it is considered endemic to the region in its wild forest form. It belongs to the large Myrtaceae family, which includes the commercially important clove tree. Its distribution in Sri Lanka is concentrated in the wet-zone lowlands.

Question 3

Where can I find Syzygium makul growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows naturally in Sri Lanka's lowland wet-zone forests, particularly along stream banks and within secondary forest patches. Question 4

Is Syzygium makul the same as the clove tree?

Accepted Answer

Question 5

What part of Syzygium makul is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The bark is the most commonly used part in traditional Ayurvedic formulations, typically prepared as a water decoction. Leaves have also been used in folk preparations. The fruit is reported to be edible and consumed locally in areas where the tree grows wild.

Question 6

How does Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda classify Syzygium makul?

Accepted Answer

Accepted Answer
