Question 1

What is Streblus taxoides used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Streblus taxoides is catalogued among Sri Lanka's recognised ayurvedic medicinal plants. Traditionally, members of the Streblus genus have been used in bark and root preparations associated with inflammation, dental complaints, and skin conditions. Specific applications are administered under the guidance of qualified ayurvedic physicians.

Question 2

Where does Streblus taxoides grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is found primarily in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, where it grows in scrub forests and secondary woodland with well-drained soils. It is not a cultivated crop plant but occurs naturally within dry-zone plant communities across the north-central and eastern parts of the island.

Question 3

Is Streblus taxoides endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Streblus taxoides is native to South Asia and is not exclusively endemic to Sri Lanka, though it is part of the island's documented flora. Sri Lanka does have a high level of plant endemism overall, and many species in the same medicinal plant catalogues are found nowhere else in the world.

Question 4

How is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue compiled?

Accepted Answer

The Department of Ayurveda under Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health maintains the official catalogue of indigenous medicinal plants. Each entry records botanical classification, vernacular names in Sinhala and Tamil, and documented traditional uses. The catalogue informs both clinical practice and the regulation of herbal medicines across the country.

Question 5

What family does Streblus taxoides belong to?

Accepted Answer

Streblus taxoides belongs to the family Moraceae, the same broad family that includes fig trees and mulberry. The genus Streblus comprises around 20 species distributed across South and Southeast Asia, several of which have documented histories of use in traditional medicine.

Question 6

Can visitors learn about ayurvedic plants while travelling in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many ayurvedic wellness centres, village tours, and nature-focused itineraries in Sri Lanka include opportunities to see and learn about medicinal plants in their natural or cultivated settings. Dry-zone safaris and herb garden visits at wellness resorts are among the most accessible ways for travellers to engage with this tradition.

Question 7

Are there scientific studies on Streblus taxoides?

Accepted Answer

Formal research specifically on Streblus taxoides is limited. Related species in the genus — particularly Streblus asper — have been more widely studied for bioactive compounds including flavonoids and triterpenoids. Interest in the genus from the natural-product research community is growing, but clinical data on taxoides specifically remains sparse.
