Question 1

What is Sterculia balanghas used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Sterculia balanghas is catalogued among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants. Its seeds, which contain mucilaginous compounds, are associated with demulcent and mild laxative properties in traditional preparations. Bark extracts have also been noted for astringent qualities in some regional traditions. Any medicinal use should be guided by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Sterculia balanghas grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is found in the dry zone and intermediate zone forests of Sri Lanka, particularly in lowland areas. It tolerates seasonal drought and is typically encountered at lower elevations rather than in the wet montane forests of the central highlands. Dry-zone landscapes in the north-central and eastern parts of the island represent typical habitat.

Question 3

Which plant family does Sterculia balanghas belong to?

Accepted Answer

Sterculia balanghas belongs to the family Malvaceae, which was previously classified as Sterculiaceae before botanical reclassification. The Sterculia genus within this family includes around 150 species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions.

Question 4

Is Sterculia balanghas endangered or protected in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sterculia balanghas is not widely reported as a critically endangered species, but like many dry-zone forest trees it faces habitat pressure from land clearance. It is not a commercially cultivated plant and is primarily encountered in remaining natural forest areas. Conservation of dry-zone forests is important for sustaining wild populations of this and related medicinal species.

Question 5

What part of the Sterculia balanghas tree is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The seeds and bark are the parts most commonly referenced in ethnobotanical records. Seeds soaked in water release a mucilage that is used in demulcent preparations, while bark extracts are noted for astringent properties. The specific preparation method depends on the intended application and the regional ayurvedic tradition being followed.

Question 6

How is Sterculia balanghas different from Sterculia urens?

Accepted Answer

Sterculia urens is known primarily for producing a commercial gum used in food and industrial applications and is mainly found in India. Sterculia balanghas is a distinct species with its own ecological range centred on South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka, where it is documented specifically in the local ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. The two species share the genus's general fruit structure but differ in range, ecology, and documented uses.

Question 7

Can I see Sterculia balanghas on a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree can potentially be encountered in dry-zone forest reserves and national parks in Sri Lanka's north-central and eastern regions, though it is not typically highlighted as a visitor attraction. Botanical gardens such as the Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens may also maintain specimens of medicinal tree species. Travellers with a specific interest in Sri Lankan medicinal plants may benefit from guided ethnobotanical tours.
