Question 1

What is Sonneratia caseolaris used for medicinally?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, Sonneratia caseolaris is used in preparations addressing bleeding, inflammation, skin conditions, and digestive complaints. The fruit, bark, and leaves each carry distinct therapeutic associations. Modern research has identified tannins, flavonoids, and other bioactive compounds in the plant's tissues that may support some of these traditional uses.

Question 2

Where can I find Sonneratia caseolaris in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows in tidal estuaries and mangrove zones across Sri Lanka's western, southern, and north-western coastlines. Notable locations include the Muthurajawela wetlands, the Madu Ganga estuary near Balapitiya, and the Puttalam lagoon system. It tends to occupy transitional or landward zones within mangrove forests.

Question 3

Is the fruit of Sonneratia caseolaris edible?

Accepted Answer

The ripe fruit is edible and has a mildly acidic flavour, and it is consumed locally in some coastal communities across South and Southeast Asia. The unripe fruit is astringent and is more commonly used in traditional medicinal preparations than eaten fresh.

Question 4

Why does Sonneratia caseolaris have roots sticking out of the ground?

Accepted Answer

These upright root structures are called pneumatophores. Because the tree grows in waterlogged, oxygen-poor mud, it has developed these pencil-like root projections that emerge above the soil surface to absorb atmospheric oxygen. They are a defining visible feature of Sonneratia caseolaris and several other mangrove species.

Question 5

What family does Sonneratia caseolaris belong to?

Accepted Answer

Under current botanical classification, Sonneratia caseolaris belongs to the family Lythraceae within the order Myrtales. It was formerly placed in the family Sonneratiaceae, but molecular studies resulted in its reassignment to Lythraceae.

Question 6

What is the Sinhala name for Sonneratia caseolaris?

Accepted Answer

The common Sinhala name for Sonneratia caseolaris is Kirala. The tree is recognised in Sri Lanka's traditional botanical and ayurvedic literature under this name.

Question 7

What animals depend on Sonneratia caseolaris?

Accepted Answer

The tree's large, night-blooming flowers are pollinated chiefly by bats. Birds and fish feed on the fallen fruit, and the leaf litter contributes to the detrital food chains that support shrimps, crabs, and juvenile fish in estuarine nursery habitats.
