Question 1

What is Shorea oblongifolia used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Shorea oblongifolia is recognized in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalog, where species in the Shorea genus are valued primarily for their resin. This resin has traditionally been used in preparations for inflammatory conditions, skin ailments, and joint disorders. The bark has also been noted for astringent properties associated with wound healing and digestive support.

Question 2

What family does Shorea oblongifolia belong to?

Accepted Answer

Shorea oblongifolia belongs to the Dipterocarpaceae family, a group of large canopy trees widespread across tropical South and Southeast Asia. Members of this family are particularly characteristic of humid lowland rainforests and are valued both ecologically and economically for their timber and resin.

Question 3

Where in Sri Lanka does Shorea oblongifolia grow?

Accepted Answer

The species is native to Sri Lanka's wet-zone tropical lowland and sub-montane forests, particularly in the southwestern and intermediate zones where annual rainfall is high. It is most likely to be found in and around protected rainforest areas such as Sinharaja. It is not typical of the island's dry zone.

Question 4

Is Shorea oblongifolia endangered or protected in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Many large Dipterocarp species in Sri Lanka face pressure from habitat loss and selective logging, and the Department of Forest Conservation monitors canopy tree populations as part of national biodiversity programs. The species benefits from protected-area coverage in wet-zone forest reserves, though its precise conservation status should be verified against current IUCN and national assessments.

Question 5

What is the Sinhala name for Shorea oblongifolia?

Accepted Answer

Shorea oblongifolia is associated with the Sinhala name 'Dun' or referred to within the broader category of resin-yielding dipterocarps in indigenous tradition. Local naming can vary by region and community, and practitioners in different areas may use related vernacular terms for trees in this genus.

Question 6

Can tourists see Shorea oblongifolia when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, guided nature walks in the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and similar wet-zone protected areas offer the best opportunity to see large Dipterocarp trees in their natural habitat. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya also maintain labeled specimens of many native Sri Lankan tree species, making them a useful and accessible reference for visitors interested in local flora.

Question 7

How does Shorea oblongifolia fit into Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has a formal national catalog of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by government health authorities, within which Shorea oblongifolia is listed. This catalog supports research, regulation, and conservation of indigenous plant species. The species sits alongside dozens of other forest-sourced botanicals that underpin classical and contemporary Ayurvedic formulations practiced on the island.
