Question 1

What is Semecarpus parvifolia used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Semecarpus parvifolia is catalogued as a medicinal plant in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition. Like related species in the Semecarpus genus, it is associated with the treatment of skin conditions and inflammatory complaints. Its active phenolic compounds require careful preparation by qualified practitioners before therapeutic use.

Question 2

Is Semecarpus parvifolia found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The genus Semecarpus is distributed across tropical Asia, but specific species within it can have limited ranges. Semecarpus parvifolia is documented within Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic plant catalogue. Precise details of its wider distribution are subject to ongoing botanical research.

Question 3

Is Semecarpus parvifolia safe to touch or handle?

Accepted Answer

Members of the Semecarpus genus produce caustic resins containing phenolic lipids that can cause contact dermatitis and skin irritation. Handling plant material, particularly the sap or fruit, without protection is not recommended. Traditional Ayurvedic use involves specific purification processes to reduce these risks.

Question 4

How is Semecarpus parvifolia different from Semecarpus anacardium?

Accepted Answer

Both species belong to the same genus and share the characteristic of producing resinous latex with potent chemical properties. Semecarpus anacardium, commonly called the marking nut tree, is far more extensively documented in Ayurvedic literature and has a broader distribution. Semecarpus parvifolia is a distinct species with smaller leaves and a more limited range.

Question 5

Where can I learn about medicinal plants of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya maintain a significant living collection of Sri Lanka's native and endemic plant species. The Department of Ayurveda in Sri Lanka also publishes official catalogues of medicinal plants. Visits to Ayurvedic gardens and traditional hospitals across the island offer hands-on learning opportunities.

Question 6

What family does Semecarpus parvifolia belong to?

Accepted Answer

Semecarpus parvifolia belongs to the family Anacardiaceae, which also includes familiar plants such as mango, cashew, and pistachio. Many members of this family produce resins or latex that can cause skin reactions in sensitive individuals. The genus Semecarpus is one of the more medicinally significant groups within this family in South and Southeast Asia.

Question 7

Does Sri Lanka have a formal list of Ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda, under the Ministry of Health, maintains an official catalogue of plant species used in indigenous medicine systems including Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. Semecarpus parvifolia is among the species included in this inventory. The catalogue supports both traditional practice and scientific research into native plant pharmacology.
