Question 1

What is Sansevieria zeylanica used for?

Accepted Answer

Sansevieria zeylanica has two main traditional uses: as a medicinal plant in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, and as a source of strong plant fibre used historically for bowstrings and ropes. Modern phytochemical research is investigating its bioactive compounds, including steroidal saponins and flavonoids, which may support some of its traditional medicinal applications.

Question 2

Where does Sansevieria zeylanica grow naturally?

Accepted Answer

The plant is native to Sri Lanka and parts of southern India. In Sri Lanka, it grows naturally in dry and intermediate zone habitats, including rocky slopes, coastal scrubland, and roadside verges, particularly across the North Central, North Western, and Southern provinces.

Question 3

What is the Sinhala name for Sansevieria zeylanica?

Accepted Answer

In Sinhala, Sansevieria zeylanica is commonly called Niyanda or Pata Niyanda. The species name zeylanica comes from Zeilan or Zeylan, historical European spellings of Ceylon, the former name for Sri Lanka.

Question 4

Is Sansevieria zeylanica the same as a snake plant?

Accepted Answer

Sansevieria zeylanica is closely related to but distinct from Sansevieria trifasciata, the widely grown "snake plant" or "mother-in-law's tongue." Both have been reclassified under the genus Dracaena by some taxonomists.

Question 5

Leaf extracts have been applied in preparations for skin conditions, earache, fever, and inflammation. The specific preparation and dosage vary according to traditional formulations and the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Question 6

How do you care for Sansevieria zeylanica as a houseplant?

Accepted Answer

Sansevieria zeylanica is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in well-drained soil with infrequent watering and indirect to bright light. It is highly drought-tolerant and can withstand neglect better than most houseplants. The main risk is overwatering, which can cause root rot.

Question 7

Is Sansevieria zeylanica toxic to pets?

Accepted Answer

Like most Sansevieria species, S. zeylanica contains saponins that can cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms — such as nausea or vomiting — if ingested by cats, dogs, or small children. It is advisable to keep the plant out of reach of pets and young children as a precaution, though skin contact during normal handling is not typically a concern.
