Question 1

What is Pennisetum glaucum used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In ayurvedic practice, Pennisetum glaucum (pearl millet) is valued primarily for its nutritive and strengthening properties. It is used in dietary therapy to support digestion, build vitality, and address nutritional deficiency. The grain is often prescribed as porridge or flour-based preparations as part of a therapeutic diet.

Question 2

Is Pennisetum glaucum the same as pearl millet?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Pennisetum glaucum is the botanical name for pearl millet. It is one of the major millet crops grown globally and is recognised in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue. It should not be confused with finger millet (Eleusine coracana), which is a separate species.

Question 3

Where is pearl millet grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Pearl millet is cultivated primarily in Sri Lanka's dry zone, particularly in the North Central and Northern provinces where rainfall is lower and soils favour dryland crops. It is sometimes intercropped with other cereals in smallholder farming systems in these regions.

Question 4

What are the health benefits of pearl millet?

Accepted Answer

Pearl millet is nutritionally dense, offering notable quantities of iron, zinc, dietary fibre, protein, and B vitamins. These properties support digestive health, immune function, energy metabolism, and bone strength. Its relatively high iron content makes it of particular interest in managing anaemia.

Question 5

How does Pennisetum glaucum differ from finger millet (kurakkan)?

Accepted Answer

Pennisetum glaucum (pearl millet) and Eleusine coracana (finger millet, or kurakkan in Sinhala) are separate species within the grass family. Finger millet is more commonly found in Sri Lankan cuisine and markets, while pearl millet is less prominent but still documented in the ayurvedic tradition. Both share broadly similar nutritional profiles but are not interchangeable in traditional formulations.

Question 6

Can I visit ayurvedic herb gardens in Sri Lanka as a tourist?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several ayurvedic centres, spice gardens, and wellness retreats across Sri Lanka maintain herb gardens that feature plants from the national medicinal plant catalogue. These visits offer hands-on context for understanding how species like pearl millet fit into the island's traditional healing systems. Lakpura can arrange tailored itineraries that include such experiences.

Question 7

Is Pennisetum glaucum found in the wild in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Pennisetum glaucum in Sri Lanka is primarily a cultivated crop rather than a wild plant. It is grown by farmers in the dry zone as a food grain and, within the context of ayurvedic practice, as a therapeutic dietary ingredient. Wild or naturalised populations are not widely documented on the island.
