Question 1

What is Parmentiera cerifera used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic and ethnobotanical traditions, various parts of Parmentiera cerifera — including the fruit, bark, and leaves — have been used in preparations associated with inflammation, skin conditions, and metabolic health. Its inclusion in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic plant catalogue reflects empirical observation over time rather than widespread classical documentation. Formal clinical research into these uses is ongoing.

Question 2

What is the common name for Parmentiera cerifera?

Accepted Answer

Parmentiera cerifera is commonly known as the candle tree, a name derived from the long, waxy, candle-like appearance of its fruit. The fruit grows directly on the trunk and main branches, a characteristic known as cauliflory. The tree is native to Central America but is cultivated in tropical regions including Sri Lanka.

Question 3

Where can I find Parmentiera cerifera in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The candle tree is not native to Sri Lanka and is not found growing wild in natural forests. It is cultivated in botanical gardens, Ayurvedic research institutions, and some home gardens, primarily in the low-country wet and intermediate zones. Institutions affiliated with Sri Lanka's Ministry of Indigenous Medicine are among the most reliable places to encounter documented specimens.

Question 4

Is Parmentiera cerifera an indigenous Sri Lankan plant?

Accepted Answer

No, Parmentiera cerifera is native to Central America, not Sri Lanka. It has been introduced to the island and incorporated into the local Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue based on its observed therapeutic properties. This reflects Sri Lanka's tradition of integrating both native and introduced species into its botanical medicine systems.

Question 5

What family does Parmentiera cerifera belong to?

Accepted Answer

Parmentiera cerifera belongs to the plant family Bignoniaceae, which includes other well-known tropical trees such as the jacaranda and various trumpet-flowered species. Members of this family are generally characterised by showy flowers and elongated fruit pods. The candle tree is somewhat unusual within the family due to its cauliflorous fruiting habit.

Question 6

What is the Ayurvedic catalogue reference for Parmentiera cerifera in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Within Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant cataloguing system, Parmentiera cerifera is recorded under the reference code LK94006761. This identifier places it within a structured national database of recognised medicinal plants maintained by relevant government institutions. The cataloguing system helps Ayurvedic practitioners and researchers locate standardised information on each species.

Question 7

Can tourists learn about Ayurvedic plants like Parmentiera cerifera while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Sri Lanka offers several opportunities to engage with Ayurvedic botanical traditions. Guided visits to Ayurvedic research institutes, herb gardens, and wellness centres provide context for plants such as Parmentiera cerifera within traditional medicine. Some cultural tourism experiences in areas like Kandy and the hill country also incorporate introductions to medicinal plant knowledge.
