Question 1

What is Oxalis latifolia used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Oxalis latifolia is used in folk preparations applied externally to minor skin irritations and wounds, valued for its mild astringent and cooling properties. The leaves have also been used as a souring agent in food and in small-scale remedies for digestive complaints. Usage is typically guided by a traditional practitioner rather than self-administered in large quantities.

Question 2

Where does Oxalis latifolia grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most common in Sri Lanka's central highlands at elevations above around 800 metres, thriving in the cooler, wetter conditions of areas like Nuwara Eliya and Badulla. It naturalises readily in home gardens, vegetable plots, and along the margins of tea estates. Its bulblets spread easily through disturbed soil, making it a familiar sight across the hill country.

Question 3

Is Oxalis latifolia the same as wood sorrel?

Accepted Answer

Oxalis latifolia is a member of the Oxalis genus and is closely related to common wood sorrel, sharing the characteristic trifoliate leaves and sour taste. It is sometimes called broadleaf wood sorrel or garden pink-sorrel to distinguish it from other species in the same genus. The various Oxalis species share similar chemical properties but differ in leaf shape, flower colour, and habitat preferences.

Question 4

Is it safe to eat Oxalis latifolia leaves?

Accepted Answer

Small quantities are generally tolerable for healthy adults and have been consumed as a souring ingredient in traditional cooking in various cultures. However, the leaves contain oxalic acid, which in larger amounts can contribute to kidney stone formation and may aggravate conditions like gout. Moderate, occasional use is the traditional approach, and those with kidney or joint conditions should avoid it.

Question 5

Why is Oxalis latifolia considered a weed in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant reproduces via numerous small bulblets produced by its underground bulb, allowing it to spread rapidly through garden soil and cultivated land. Once established, it competes aggressively with crops and ornamental plants and is difficult to eradicate completely because even small bulblet fragments left in the soil will regenerate. Despite this, it has been incorporated into traditional knowledge systems rather than viewed purely as a nuisance.

Question 6

What chemical compounds are found in Oxalis latifolia?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains oxalic acid — responsible for its sour taste — along with Vitamin C, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. These constituents have attracted scientific attention for their antioxidant and antimicrobial potential, and laboratory studies have confirmed some of the properties recorded in traditional use. Clinical research in human populations remains limited, so traditional uses should be approached with appropriate caution.

Question 7

How is Oxalis latifolia identified in the field?

Accepted Answer

Look for a low-growing herb with clover-like leaves made up of three broadly triangular leaflets, growing directly from the ground without a visible stem. The leaves often have a faint purplish tinge, and the plant produces small pink or light purple funnel-shaped flowers on slender stalks. It grows from a bulb that produces clusters of daughter bulblets, which you may notice when pulling the plant from the soil.
