Question 1

What is Ophioglossum pendulum?

Accepted Answer

Ophioglossum pendulum is an epiphytic fern ally in the family Ophioglossaceae, also known as the ribbon adder's-tongue. It grows on tree trunks and branches in humid tropical forests and is distinguished by its long, strap-shaped, undivided fronds and an embedded spore-bearing spike. It is catalogued as a medicinal plant in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition.

Question 2

Where does Ophioglossum pendulum grow?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found across tropical Asia, Africa, and the Pacific, including Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zone forests. It grows as an epiphyte, anchoring itself in the crevices of tree canopies rather than in soil, and requires consistently high humidity to thrive.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Ophioglossum pendulum in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In South and Southeast Asian Ayurvedic practice, species in the Ophioglossum genus have been associated with wound healing, skin conditions, and anti-inflammatory applications. Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia includes the plant in its formal catalog of medicinal species, though specific preparations should only be used under the guidance of a trained practitioner.

Question 4

Is Ophioglossum pendulum a fern?

Accepted Answer

Ophioglossum pendulum belongs to the fern allies — plants that reproduce via spores and share evolutionary lineage with true ferns but have distinct structural characteristics. The Ophioglossaceae family is considered one of the most ancient lineages of vascular plants, with a fossil record stretching back hundreds of millions of years.

Question 5

Where can I see Ayurvedic medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy maintain extensive labeled collections of Sri Lanka's flora. Ayurvedic hospitals and wellness centres often have herb gardens open to visitors. Guided nature walks in wet zone forest reserves also offer opportunities to encounter documented medicinal plants in their natural habitat.

Question 6

How is Ophioglossum pendulum catalogued in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It carries the reference code LK94006071 within Lakpura's catalog of Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicinal plants, reflecting its formally documented status within the island's ethnobotanical record. Sri Lanka has a long tradition of systematically recording medicinal plant knowledge through both government institutions and university faculties of indigenous medicine.

Question 7

Is Ophioglossum pendulum endangered in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Specific conservation status data for Ophioglossum pendulum in Sri Lanka is not widely published in accessible sources, but epiphytic plants generally are sensitive to deforestation and habitat degradation because they depend on mature forest canopy. Conservation of Sri Lanka's wet zone forests is therefore important for the survival of species like this one.
