Question 1

What is Limnophila repens used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and Indian Ayurvedic tradition, Limnophila repens is primarily used for its reported anti-inflammatory and febrifuge properties. Preparations of the aerial parts — typically decoctions or poultices — have been applied to mild fevers, skin irritations, and rheumatic complaints. It functions more in folk or household medicine than in codified classical formulations.

Question 2

Where does Limnophila repens grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found mainly in the wet and intermediate lowland zones of Sri Lanka, usually below 500 metres elevation. It favours paddy-field margins, drainage channels, irrigation tanks, and slow-moving streams. Districts with extensive rice cultivation, such as those in the North Central and Southern provinces, are among its most common habitats.

Question 3

Is Limnophila repens the same as rice paddy herb?

Accepted Answer

Limnophila repens is closely related to the plant commonly called rice paddy herb (Limnophila aromatica), which is widely used as a culinary herb in South-East Asian cooking. They share similar habitats and some physical characteristics, but are distinct species. L. repens is more specifically documented in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia of Sri Lanka.

Question 4

Is Limnophila repens endangered or threatened in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not currently considered threatened in Sri Lanka. Its tolerance for disturbed, agricultural wetland environments allows it to persist even where more specialised plants have declined. However, widespread use of herbicides in rice cultivation and the draining of natural wetlands pose an indirect risk to the broader wetland plant communities it inhabits.

Question 5

What family does Limnophila repens belong to?

Accepted Answer

Limnophila repens is placed in the family Plantaginaceae under current botanical classification, though older literature often lists the genus Limnophila under Scrophulariaceae. The genus comprises around 35–40 species distributed across tropical Asia and Africa, several of which occur in Sri Lanka.

Question 6

How is Limnophila repens different from other Limnophila species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka hosts several Limnophila species, including L. indica and L. heterophylla, all of which share broadly similar wetland habitats. L. repens is distinguished by its creeping, mat-forming growth habit and smaller, finely toothed opposite leaves. Accurate identification often requires close examination of leaf arrangement, flower structure, and stem habit.

Question 7

Can I find Limnophila repens growing near tourist destinations in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the plant can often be spotted near paddy fields and irrigation channels in rural areas throughout Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones. Wetland-rich destinations such as the Madu Ganga lagoon system in the south-west, or paddy-farming villages around the Cultural Triangle, are likely environments where the herb may be found growing naturally.
