Question 1

Who was King Mayadunne of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

King Mayadunne (c. 1511–1581) was the ruler of the Sitawaka Kingdom in Sri Lanka, one of three successor states to the Kingdom of Kotte. He is best known for his prolonged and largely successful military resistance to Portuguese colonisation during the sixteenth century.

Question 2

Where was the Sitawaka Kingdom located?

Accepted Answer

The Sitawaka Kingdom was centred in the interior region of what is today Sabaragamuwa and the western hinterland of Sri Lanka, roughly around the area of present-day Avissawella. Its highland terrain and rich cinnamon forests gave it both defensive advantages and economic resources.

Question 3

How long did King Mayadunne resist the Portuguese?

Accepted Answer

Mayadunne resisted Portuguese power for approximately six decades, from the establishment of his independent kingdom around 1521 until his death around 1581. During this period he fought numerous campaigns, allied with Indian rulers, and repeatedly threatened Portuguese positions along the coast.

Question 4

Did King Mayadunne succeed in expelling the Portuguese from Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Mayadunne never fully expelled the Portuguese, but he prevented them from consolidating control over Sri Lanka's interior and kept them on a costly defensive footing for much of his reign. His campaigns laid the groundwork for his son Rajasinha I, who came even closer to capturing the Portuguese stronghold at Colombo.

Question 5

What was the significance of cinnamon in Mayadunne's kingdom?

Accepted Answer

The Sitawaka Kingdom controlled large cinnamon forests, and cinnamon was among the most valuable commodities in sixteenth-century global trade. This gave Mayadunne an economic resource to fund armies and maintain alliances, and it was one of the key reasons the Portuguese were so determined to control the Sri Lankan interior.

Question 6

How is King Mayadunne remembered in Sri Lankan culture?

Accepted Answer

Mayadunne is remembered primarily as a patriotic king who refused to submit to Portuguese colonial authority, in contrast to his brother Bhuvanekabahu VII who accommodated Portuguese influence. He holds an important place in Sri Lankan historical consciousness as a symbol of indigenous resistance to early European colonialism.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sitawaka history in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The area around Avissawella, about 50 kilometres east of Colombo, encompasses the historical heartland of the Sitawaka Kingdom. The National Museum in Colombo also holds artefacts and documentation relating to the Sitawaka period and Sri Lanka's broader medieval history.
